MCT oil, or medium-chain fatty acids (medium-chain triglycerides) are saturated fats consisting of fatty acids that contain 6 to 10 (and according to some sources, up to 12) carbon atoms.

Although it is a saturated fat, it differs from other fatty acids in this group due to, among other things, a different absorption method – MCT oil is absorbed from the intestinal epithelial cells and, via the portal vein, goes directly to the liver, making the speed at which the compound from the digestive tract enters the bloodstream similar to glucose. Additionally, its digestion does not require the presence of lipase and bile ducts, which positively affects the pace of the process. MCT oil consists of fatty acids such as six-carbon capric acid, eight-carbon caprylic acid, and ten-carbon capric acid.

This is a product often used as a component in vitamin supplements – as a fat source, MCT oil positively affects the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Additionally, the compound is an energy source with a neutral taste and smell, which is why it is also gladly used by people on a ketogenic diet, for example, as a component in bulletproof coffee.
